InterpPlay is a unique and innovative series of workshops in sign language interpreting for theatre, developed by Dr Siobhán Rocks and Dr Alex McDonald over more than 15 years of research and practice.

InterpPlay is informed by our doctoral research and builds on our previous research projects - Terpsichore (2008) and Third Way (2003) (both part funded by Arts Council England).

InterpPlay workshops advance holistic approaches to the art and practice of theatre sign language interpreting, and introduce

fundamental new strategies for working in this complex and highly specialised setting.

Drawing on the disciplines of theatre studies, audiovisual translation, sign language interpreting and dramaturgy, the programme brings together sign language interpreters and theatre professionals to share specialist knowledge, and to explore the interplay between the interpreter, the performance, and the audience.

What can you expect from an InterpPlay Introduction workshop?

A day of exploration and experimentation with a big question:

How does theatre combine audible and visual information to make meaning, and how can the theatre sign language interpreter begin to negotiate such a complex text?

Sounds heavy? Not at all! Here's what participants have said:

'I was anxious about joining the course, but I felt confortable the whole day'.

'It was so interactive, supportive, and a safe space'.

'A great mix of discussion and practical - safe environment, very collaborative and non-judgemental'.

'The workshop has given us all the opportunity to step back from practice and consider why we make the decisions we do'.

'The theatre professionals' input was invaluable - a great choice of lovely people'.

'The workshop was incredibly useful - not just for staged performances. Loved the group, loved the balance of activities - delivery was fantastic'.

'A really informal, safe environment. Very informative, I learnt a lot but in a practical way'.

'I particularly liked that it wasn't 'this is wrong/this is right' - more an exploration of options'.

'It's good to understand how to look for what theatre-makers are aiming for, to gain a better decision-making process'.

What a fantastic day!  It gave me so much to think about, and put into practice...an amazing team.

'Brilliant - can't wait for the next one!'

If you're interested in experimenting with new and exciting ways of working in theatre, why not join Siobhán and Alex with dramaturg and translator Eva Daníčková,  actor and director Richard Oliver, and director and theatre maker Jonathan V McGrath for a day of exploration?
